Solomon’s Castle

If you find yourself wanting a day trip in Southwest Florida, I have the perfect spot for you, Solomon’s Castle! Solomon’s Castle covers 12,000 square feet and stands three stories high. Solomon has covered every exterior surface with discarded aluminum printing plates that the papers used to throw out after one use.  This charming and fun castle is located in the middle of farmland passing by cattle and lots of orange groves. It’s a lovely drive for a Sunday Morning! Our friends took us here on our last visit to Florida, and I have to admit, it was a lot of fun!

I knew this place was going to be a hit before I even got in the vicinity of the castle, because the parking lot was packed! We even had to wait for a couple of tours before we had a chance to go through the museum. Luckily we did get to see Mr. Solomon with his golf cart before our tour started. The tour is only $10 but remember to bring cash, as they do not take plastic!

The castle is built entirely from recycled materials and houses the artist, Howard Solomon and his wife as well as his museum. His art is filled with amusing interpretations as well as some pretty awesome pieces like the elephant and lion made out of oil drums! Essentially, the castle serves as an exhibition gallery for several hundred pieces of Solomon’s sculptures.

The museum tour ends at their Boat in the Moat restaurant, because yes, he built a boat in the moat as well! The restaurant is run and operated by Mr. Solomon’s kids, and let me tell you the food was great. But the walnut pie was absolutely the best part.

Although it’s not on the tour, it is recommended that you head down the path and you can see Mr. Solomon’s workshops, garages and something he calls the Ala-Shmo!
